Al-Bassam: September 9 is a day that immortalized Kuwait's humanity.
Namaa Charity, affiliated with the Social Reform Society, affirmed that September 9th will remain a day etched in Kuwait's national and humanitarian memory, a day that carries profound connotations and sublime messages. It is a day on which Kuwait raises its flag not only as a small country in its geographical area, but also as a nation with a great humanitarian legacy and leadership in supporting those in need and afflicted peoples across the globe.
On this timeless national and humanitarian occasion, Waleed Al-Bassam, Head of Projects and Development at Namaa Charity, said: "Today, we stand on the threshold of a memory dear to all our hearts: the United Nations' honoring of the late Amir, His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, may God have mercy on him, with the title of "Humanitarian Leader" and the designation of the State of Kuwait as a Humanitarian Center on September 9, 2014. This UN initiative was not merely an official honor; it was an explicit international recognition of Kuwait's leadership in charitable work and the embodiment of a historical journey of giving and generosity spanning decades." Kuwait... Homeland of Humanity
Al-Bassam added: "Kuwait, since its inception, has been and will remain a nation of humanitarian work par excellence. Since the days of pearl diving and maritime trade, Kuwaitis have known the value of cooperation and solidarity, and their generous hands extended to their Gulf and Arab surroundings, and then to the entire world. This international honor is the culmination of a long journey of humanitarian initiatives that have known no borders, race, religion, or color, but rather stemmed from the humanity of humanity to extend a hand to all those in need." His Highness the Late Amir… A Symbol of Global Humanity
Al-Bassam emphasized that the personality of His Highness the Late Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad, may God have mercy on him, will remain immortal in the memory of humanity, not only as a brilliant political leader, but also as an "Emir of Humanity," who was able to translate Islamic principles and authentic Kuwaiti values into foreign policies and practical initiatives. This enabled Kuwait to become a global platform for charitable work and humanitarian diplomacy. Kuwait hosted international donor conferences in support of the brotherly Syrian people in their ordeal, supported Iraq in the post-war period, contributed to the reconstruction of eastern Sudan, and opened its heart and resources to aid the Palestinians, Rohingya, Yemenis, and victims of natural disasters from Asia to Africa. Humanitarian Work… A Medal of Honor for Every Kuwaiti
Al-Bassam explained that this honor was not only an honor for His Highness the late Emir, but also a badge of pride for every Kuwaiti, and indeed for every person who believes in the value of charity. Kuwait did not provide its assistance out of political interest or a hidden agenda, but rather out of a humanitarian and Islamic duty, and from a deep sense that "man is a brother to man," and that the suffering of others must be met with a response.
Kuwaiti Charitable Work… From Popular to Institutional Campaigns
He added: "The anniversary of September 9th brings us back to the stages of development of Kuwaiti charitable work, which began with popular campaigns and individual and collective initiatives in neighborhoods and regions, then evolved into pioneering charitable organizations such as the Social Reform Society and major endowment foundations, reaching the global institutional stage, where today they contribute to educational, health, relief, and development programs in dozens of countries." Kuwait at the Heart of Global Challenges
Al-Bassam pointed out that as the world faces successive crises, including wars, conflicts, epidemics, and natural disasters, Kuwait has always been at the forefront. At a time when political conflicts have overwhelmed international organizations and the pace of humanitarian response in crisis areas has slowed, Kuwait has taken the initiative to hold conferences, provide funding, and open its doors to international partners, proving itself as the voice of the global humanitarian conscience.
Authentic Principles in Islam and Kuwait's Identity
Al-Bassam emphasized that this approach was not a new phenomenon, but rather an extension of the principles of Islam that urge support for the oppressed and relief for those in need. It also embodies Kuwait's national identity, which is built on generosity, giving, and solidarity. Kuwaitis are inherently generous, making charitable work a daily culture before it becomes an institution or a law. Hence, Kuwait has been designated a Center for Humanitarian Action in recognition of this cultural value. Present Challenges... and Future Responsibilities
At the same time, Al-Bassam emphasized that this honor does not mean resting on the past or being satisfied with what has been achieved. Rather, it places a great responsibility on us for the present and the future. In light of the protracted crises in Gaza, Syria, Yemen, and Sudan, and with the worsening climate disasters in Africa and Asia, it is imperative for us to continue working as a team and to develop our charitable work tools, from transparency and governance to innovation and digitization.
Namaa Charity... Part of the Journey
Al-Bassam concluded his statement by saying: “Namaa Charity, at the Social Reform Society, is proud to be part of this Kuwaiti humanitarian legacy and considers itself a link in an extended chain of giving. At Namaa, we work to promote sustainability in charitable work through development programs that empower families, sponsor orphans, support students, and provide water and food to those in need. Today, we renew our pledge to follow in Kuwait's footsteps and principles, and to continue our mission at home and abroad, in a manner befitting our nation's history and its status as a center for humanitarian action.”
